A GALLERY IN THE CITY

The choice of site relates to the artist Nathan Coley. Blackfriars Street is a pedestrian street, a opportune site for social gathering and creating a hub reflecting the 'social' aspect of the artists work. The Blackfriars Gallery was to show the character of the artist. Aspects of the design included public vs. private considerations, a place encouraging visitors to stay and investigate the social aspect of the built environment.

At ground level, a glazed corner breaks the rhythm of the street suggesting an entrance and reveal activities. Light plays a pivotal role, light wells puncture through floor plates to channel and diffuse light to the exhibition spaces. The plans are based on public and private and creating a legible sequence to the main spaces. The perforated stainless steel panels contrast the transparency of the corner with an implemented panel pattern to mimic surroundings and reflects the idea of public and private.
