A LIBRARY IN ST. ANDREWS

The site is located between Market and North Street. St Andrews consists of a grid of primary, secondary and tertiary routes. These are of importance as they were established to allow movement and access to the market place.

An initial thought was how to consider and implement the street rhythm and network of routes within the building. The historical notion of the market place and gathering was referenced in the library, links of the town formed to allow access to gathering space. The town features a hard edge versus organic core configuration within its blocks. The library resembles this nature with solids wrapped around voids. The voids are based on the notion of showcasing the function of the building.

The plan diagram of the building is a set of planes and masses extruded from the volume of the main mass. The planes represent the solid and how the subtle angle of the exterior wall is brought into the building creating the perimeter of the atrium, an organic core.
